Not many people would look at Medusa and think she belongs on the cover of a beauty magazine. However, she was not always so ugly! There are various versions of this story, but there was actually a time before her hair hissed. In fact, at one point, her flowing hair probably would have made her worthy of a commercial for Herbal Essences shampoo and conditioner! She caught the attention of many men, including Poseidon. Medusa was a bit conceited--meaning she was overly proud of herself and her beauty.
One day, she went to Athena's temple and started to insult Athena's looks. This angered Athena, so Athena turned Medusa into a hideous creature. Talk about revenge. Medusa's hair had been replaced with snakes, and no one could look into her eyes anymore or else they would turn to stone! If staring contests were a thing back then, you would not have wanted to compete against her! If you have your own comments and questions about Medusa, feel free to leave them on this post. Next week, we will read one of my favorite chapters of The Lightning Thief. We will get to see Medusa!
