Our long-awaited April vacation is here! What a way to kick it off with our talent show yesterday. I’m incredibly pleased with two of our very own sixth graders for making us proud. As members of the audience, it’s sometimes difficult to recognize how much courage goes into getting on that stage!
Speaking of courage, I cannot really think of April vacation anymore without recalling the events that happened last year. This past Tuesday, our school represented how we were “Boston Strong” on the anniversary of the Boston Bombing, and this Monday will be the 118th Boston Marathon. While April 15th, 2013 was a horrific day, I remind myself that the situation would have been much worse had there been a lack of courage. When everything appeared to be falling apart and when we were all fearful that we couldn't trust others, it took the grace of perfect strangers to band together and make one another feel whole again. We learned that villains do not only exist in comic books and movies, but we also learned that the same is true about heroes. There are heroes among us every day. If you spend so much time fearing the villains, you might miss out on finding the heroes.
No matter what you do over the break, I wish you safety, happiness, and relaxation. When we return, we’ll start our cultural heritage unit. You’ll interview your family members on your background, explore your identities, and complete a WebQuest!
Until then, take care!
-Ms. Sanford
P.S. With ten days ahead of you, this might be a good time to watch Matilda!
