As you write your first assignment for the Independent Book Project (due 12/18), you should consider the significance of setting. A book is not just randomly “set” at a time and location. A former student once asked me what she should write for this assignment since her book did not have a setting. She asked, “Ms. Sanford, what if our book takes place in the middle of nowhere?” I explained that “the middle of nowhere” is still somewhere! All books occur somewhere! Likewise, all books take place at a certain time. Even if the time period is not specifically mentioned, you—as a thoughtful reader—can figure out the general time period based on context. What are the characters wearing? What inventions/technological devices are being used? How are the characters speaking? If your characters are talking about swag, then this book was probably not set in Grandma Sanford’s day!
Let’s see how many people are reading this update. If you’re one of those diligent, hard-working, attentive students, I would like you to have some fun and do the following: Go to Edmodo. Find your small group's page. When you get to that page, I want you to write me a short letter (about 4 sentences). Start it with "Dear. Ms. Sanford," and end it with "Sincerely" (followed by your name). Here’s what I’d like you to include in your letter: What is one project/assignment/topic that we’ve discussed thus far that has interested you? What is one project/assignment/topic that you would like to complete this year if time allows? What is one goal that you have for yourself for the rest of the year? And, for good measure, what is your best joke? (The holidays are approaching. I need some material for Grandma Sanford, folks!)
-Ms. Sanford
