Today I gave you your character writing assignment on The City of Ember. I would suggest not waiting until Tuesday night to begin! If you start this assignment over the weekend, you can at least ask me any lingering questions during our class on Monday. I will post my rubric and writing sample tomorrow afternoon either through this website or through Edmodo. Stay tuned to Edmodo for the official announcement once those items are posted. Remember that we will not meet on Tuesday since there is no school. Your other major writing assignment this term, as you know, was your summer reading essay. However, now that we've had two months together, I expect each person's writing to have improved. That means, of course, that I do not want to see run-on sentences, incomplete sentences, or comma splices. Additionally, I want to see you support yourself with hearty paragraphs, using specific details from the text. This assignment should not feel like a burden. Rather, it should feel like an opportunity to show off what you know about a character from one of your favorite books! Choose a character who interests you, but obviously choose wisely. Even though you may consider Nammy Proggs to be quite the fascinating lady, you may find yourself stuck in a hole trying to write about her. After all, she has a very small role in the book. Don't make your task more difficult than it needs to be. Put this assignment into perspective. Jeanne DuPrau wrote 270 phenomenal pages. I have more than enough confidence that all of you can manage to write 2 phenomenal paragraphs! Prove me right!
I'll see many of you at the dance later! Now, who's going to request "Video Killed the Radio Star" in honor of our Musical Monday?!
-Ms. Sanford
